This past Saturday I met up with 3 graduating seniors, Jessie, Hailey, and Alli on the steps of Burruss Hall at Virginia Tech! I first met Jessie two years ago in the Interior Design Program. I’ve watched her grow into a talented designer within the last two years and am so excited for her to enter the profession with a new job in North Carolina!
Jessie reached out to me about a month ago and asked if I could photograph her and her roommates. I was all about it! Especially if it meant a trip back to my favorite school, Virginia Tech! This time of year is especially popular for senior portraits around the campus. I ran into several other photographers photographing seniors all day.
The steps of Burruss Hall are usually soaked with champagne by the end of the day from all of the senior photo shoots! These ladies came prepared with their caps, gowns and boyfriends in tow! I loved that their men made an appearance and I wasn’t going to let them get away without snapping a few photos together. They were great about jumping in!
This session was extra special for me because this is how my business got its start. I had purchased a beginner DSLR camera my freshman year of school to photograph my design projects and travels. By my sophomore year in school my sister was about to graduate high school. She came up to VT for a visit and I photographed her senior portraits while we hiked the Cascades (a popular hike in Blacksburg). After taking her photos her friends began to inquire about sessions. Every time I was home on a break I photographed more and more of my sisters friends. Before I knew it I started taking head shots for friends, photographing families, and eventually I photographed my first wedding.
By the time my senior year came around I had booked 3 weddings and continued to photograph seniors. The week of my own graduation I had at least two sessions booked everyday! I was still getting requests as I was driving out of Blacksburg and it was around this time that I realized I had to keep this up! After I graduated I started a full time job as an interior designer and began to plan my own wedding. I put thoughts about continuing my photography business on hold. As soon as I got married…I picked right back up! And I’m so glad I did! Not only do I continually get to meet great people, but I get to capture such special moments in time. It really is an honor and I love developing this growing passion of mine!
Had to include the boyfriends!!
