This year I have so many winter engagements to share! Between November and February of 2019 and early 2020 I have been busy photographing engagements and even a proposal! It is not the most typical time of year for me to constantly have my camera in hand!
Engagement sessions are often the first time I meet my couples and they serve as a great time for us to get to know each other before their wedding day. I love to use this time to show them how I will pose them and photograph them so that everyone is comfortable when the wedding day comes.
The first session of in November took me to Blacksburg, VA to photograph Allison and Drew at their alma matter. They met because of Virginia Tech and it was special to photograph them on and around campus. November was the perfect month because a sunrise session on campus meant that not too many students were out and about. In late November I met Kelly and Kevin at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis, MD. They brought their pup Lucy and it was the perfect location for their sweet black lab to run around. I love it when couples bring their puppies!
Even later into November, I met Beverly (my cousin) and John right outside of Philadelphia, PA. We shot their engagement session just a month before their December wedding. We found an amazing patch of tall, dead, golden grass! Sounds crazy, but it makes for amazing winter photos. In mid December I drove down to Richmond, VA to meet Abigail and Brandon for the first time. They currently live in South Carolina and their wedding will be in Charleston, but we had to make sure we met beforehand! Richmond was the perfect in between location and I loved getting to know them all afternoon.
In January I met with Sallie and David for the first time. We photographed their engagement session just around the block from their home on U street in Washington, DC. It was fitting to stay in their neighborhood with their brand new puppy. We managed to get a super warm day, amazing light, and even some green trees! At the very end of January I hid in the canals of Georgetown just before Nick proposed to his now fiance, Brittany! It was such a sweet surprise and a very happy moment when I could let out a sigh of relief from nailing the timing!
Just last week I traveled down to Richmond, VA again to meet an old childhood friend, Caitlin, and her now fiance, Ryan. We met at Libby Hill park and spent the afternoon walking around the streets getting to know each other. We ended their session at Belle Isle and re-visited one of my favorite “tall grass” locations. It made for beautiful portraits.
Shooting in the winter months can often pose as a challenge in terms of weather, lighting, and the much earlier sunsets. Despite this they can be cozy, more intimate, and less crowded in certain locations. I have rounded up some of my favorite images from the last several months that all perfectly display that shooting in the winter is possible and gorgeous!
